Philip Geiger

This exhibition for Philip Geiger marks his first solo exhibition with SCAPE. Like Fairfield Porter and Vermeer before, Geiger depicts intimate domestic scenes. One of the artist’s overriding preoccupations is capturing the light at any given time of day. His paintings’ lustrous light, loose brushwork and subtle color tellingly capture the nuances of mood and feeling that make up the more peaceful moments of contemporary family life. His paintings challenge viewers to meditate on our society’s daily rituals and settings, and the meanings which may underlie seemingly mundane moments.
Philip Geiger received his MFA from Yale University in 1980. He has exhibited widely throughout the United States and Ireland, and has been the recipient of numerous art grants and awards. His paintings are represented in several prominent public collections and have attracted critical acclaim in reviews with the New York Times, Art in America, ARTnews, and The New Criterion.
